Smart Bins

A smart waste management system developed for Rommtech, The Netherlands, aimed at optimizing the collection process through sensor-enabled dustbins. The Smart Bins detect their fill levels in real-time and visually indicate when they are near capacity. Integrated with a digital platform accessible via web and mobile, the system also features intelligent route optimization for waste collection teams, reducing fuel usage, improving service efficiency, and minimizing environmental impact.

Problem Statement
Traditional waste collection systems often operate on fixed schedules, leading to inefficiencies such as collecting half-empty bins or missing full ones. This results in unnecessary fuel consumption, increased labor costs, and missed opportunities to optimize municipal services. There was a need for a smarter, data-driven approach to manage waste collection effectively.
Our Solution
We developed a Smart Bin system with embedded sensors that monitor and report bin fill levels in real-time. When a bin reaches a predefined threshold, a visual indicator is activated and the data is sent to a centralized platform. This information feeds into a route optimization engine that plans the most efficient pickup routes, reducing operational costs and environmental impact. The system is accessible via web and mobile apps, allowing waste management teams to monitor, manage, and respond dynamically to changing needs.
